Announcement
February 21, 2008
Joe Daughtery agrees to run for county
commissioner.
Today, Joe Daughtery, 57, filed to
represent District 6 on the Board of Commissioners
currently held by Jack Best.
“I have decided to run for this seat
after many days of careful thought and discussions
with many residents in and out of the District.
Although I consider Jack as a friend, I feel I can
bring a more conservative voice and bring fresh ideas
and perspective in finding solutions to the diverse
challenges facing our county.”
Having run for commissioner in prior
years, Daughtery knows the district and believes that
the voters of District 6 are ready for some real
change on the Board of Commissioners.
Daughtery has 5 major goals.
1.
Resolving the differences between the Wayne County
Board of Commissioners and the Wayne County Board of
Education. Common sense tells us that to get different
results, one must change the people making the
decisions. “We are only going to get the same result
with the same input from the same board members.”
Solutions cannot wait another 4 years, we must find
solutions now.” I support the need for a reasonable
bond referendum to solve the construction needs of our
schools. Now is the time to build new schools with
building costs and interest rates down. Industry and
newcomers want to locate where the community is
committed to providing the best curriculum,
technology, buildings, and teachers.
2.
As a
conservative, Daughtery wants to explore ways to
improve efficiency and reduce regulations. “Everyone
dislikes paying taxes but they are necessary. Citizens
accept paying these taxes as long as government can
justify the reason for these taxes. Building up a huge
reserve is not a convincing reason for higher taxes.”
3.
As a
businessman, Daughtery believes he can bring some
practical and common sense ideas to the decision
making process. My upbringing taught me not only to be
careful with spending but also to invest for the
future.
4.
Improved transportation, including highways and rails,
to and from Wayne County will bring industry and jobs.
I-795 must be connected to I-40. We must push to
improve US 13 to Greenville. Freight and passenger
rail needs continued work.
5.
Some
perceive an “imperial” government; I want to make
local government more user friendly for the citizens.
I will always vote with people in mind, not government
agencies or departments. I will be mindful that a
commissioner’s decisions affect the lives of real
people. I will always work to be helpful, open minded,
and compassionate.
Many have asked what I would have done
differently if I were on the Board.
I would have opposed the awkward and
dangerous configuration of the intersection of Beston
Road and US Highway 70 East.
I would have opposed a ¼ cent local
sales tax unless the property tax was reduced by an
equal dollar amount making the new tax revenue
neutral.
I would have pushed for minimum housing
standards for all types of dwellings in Wayne County.
I would have voted against the 11% (7 ½
cent) property tax increase because it had no specific
designation but rather it’s only purpose was to
increase the millions set aside in savings accounts.
I would have pushed for a specific bond
referendum to cure the construction needs of our
schools. We have put this off for over a decade thus
increasing the overall cost of construction.
Daughtery stated that he is very proud
to have served 2 terms on the Board of Election. While
serving as the only Republican, he was able to find
agreement with the Democratic members to oversee the
transformation to a technology based office, which
operates today to insure accurate and fair elections
in Wayne County.
Daughtery also served on the steering
committee which formulated the current Wayne County
Comprehensive Plan.

25th anniversary. His business background
includes real estate broker, developer, restaurant
